Williams Martin

Oxford University Press

“The Ellington Era, 1927–1940” is a three-LP set from Columbia. It is the first volume of a series of two, the second to be out soon and to cover the same period. It is also the first extensive retrospective that a major artist has had on records in America. “The Ellington Era, 1927–1940”, Volume Two is, like its predecessor, a three-LP collection, drawn in this case from forty-four old 78 r.p.m. records. Ellington's own “Showboat Shuffle”, from three years later, is a masterpiece of momentum, in variations, in theme, in technical execution, and in orchestration.
