“The Man That Got Away” was Ira Gershwin's last great standard, coming exactly thirty years after “The Man I Love,” their themes of innocent longing and bitter loss neatly bracketing a career devoted to variations on simple romantic formulas. While “The Man I Love” was shunted in and out of three different musicals, “The Man That Got Away” was filmed as brilliantly as any song could be. While done as a “performance,” it is still perfectly integrated into A Star Is Born, foreshadowing Mason's sudden alcoholic disappearance after he persuades Garland to leave the band, as well as his ultimate escape into suicide.
