Some of the earliest chant MSS from St. Gall include the Offices for the two primary saints of the region, Gallus and Othmar. These sources are D-W MS Guelf. 17.5. Aug. 4o (890-920), and GB-Lbl MS Add. 21170 (c.920). The Offices of both saints were also copied around the year 1000 in the Antiphoner of Hartker. Sources such as these allow us to glimpse at first hand how music and texts for new Offices were created in the 10th and 11th centuries in St. Gall., adapting older materials to new circumstances. Discussion of these two Offices incorporates different emphases, depending upon the nature of the materials.
