This chapter focuses on how to build generic competence in organizational learning. Building an organization that excels at double-loop learning and one that genuinely integrates the necessary managerial tasks with the relevant human factors is critical. The most effective way to champion Model II skills is for the leaders of any organization to produce them in their dealings with others and their immediate subordinates. In this way, they demonstrate their new skills. And, perhaps more important, they demonstrate that they are willing to be challenged when they are not using Model II skills. This chapter also illustrates how this strategy was, and continues to be, implemented at Monitor Company, a global consulting firm located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They understood that building these generic competencies had to begin with the leaders of the firm.
