The goal of environmental health is the prevention of disease through identification and elimination of environmental hazards or the reduction of exposures. This chapter argues that although exposure assessment and epidemiology can contribute to continued progress in achieving this goal, it will not occur without integrated, biologically based methods of study design and analysis. With the rapid proliferation of molecular and cell biology, the mechanisms underlying pathologic processes leading to adverse effects are increasingly well understood. This new knowledge should be used more systematically as the theoretical basis of exposure-response modeling. Disease process models can provide a simple but useful starting point and a framework for added complexity as new information is discovered.
