The previous chapters laid out a systematic approach for constructing disease process models and their related dose metrics, which can advance the integration of exposure assessment and epidemiology. At this time, there is no systematic way to integrate exposure data, toxicologic mechanisms, and population investigations that takes advantage of the strengths of each approach. More important, the structured approach naturally leads to the formulation of testable hypotheses as new information is integrated. This chapter identifies the many possible future directions for developing this approach for specific problems and as a broad theoretical framework.
