For his first inland tour managed efficiently by Bernard Ullman, Henri Herz teamed up with the Italian violinist Camillo Sivori (1815-94), with whom he performed virtuosic duets, and later the cellist George Knoop. Herz was particularly successful in New Orleans, where he felt at home because of the French culture. Herz's performances often included improvisations incorporating American popular music, including minstrel tunes, into his opera-based works. Among the pieces he composed while in America are sets of variations on national American airs (“Yankee Doodle” and “General Jackson's March”) and on “The Last Rose of Summer”, probably his most popular new work based on the Thomas Moore setting of an Irish melody.
