This chapter covers the use of the strengths and skills-building model with non-offending parents whose children have recently disclosed sexual abuse. One important goal is to assess and enhance the parents' supportiveness of the child, using motivational and solution-focused techniques. Specifically, solution-focused scaling interventions allow parents as well as professionals to view supportiveness on a continuum rather than in a dichotomous way. Seeing a mother as either supportive or not can create cognitive dissonance in which a mother might be forced to defend a premature position of not believing and protecting her child. Another goal of the work is to provide parents with information about sexual abuse dynamics. This information needs to be relayed through a collaborative process in which the worker uses deductive questioning, adult analogies, and normalizes parents' concerns. Case examples illustrate major techniques and involve both individual and group modalities.
