Empire of Love

Oxford University Press

This chapter sets the stage by initially following the career and works of French naval officer and writer, Pierre Loti, and his powerful French Third Republic patron, Juliette Adam, as they “romance” a popular overseas empire that for both reflects back upon their highly emotional ideas of the nation. The narrative moves between the naval port town of Rochefort, where Loti created a fantastic, Orientalist personal estate, and the politics and literary salons of Paris, where a romantic idea of empire is created in stories for patriotic, national consumption.
