This chapter focuses on the meaning and importance of globalization and global strategy. The chapter addresses the question “Why does it matter whether an industry is considered global or not?”, and argues that it does matter a great deal. Three case examples are provided to illustrate how industries operate across borders and connect buyers and sellers regardless of the large geographical distances between them. The cases are set in the diamonds, sushi, and trash industries. The chapter considers the fundamental question of why firms pursue global expansion. It examines the concept of distance and its impact on global strategy, and discusses some of the key competitive issues that MNE (multinational enterprise) managers will face in the coming years.

Keywords:   globalization, distance, strategy, borders, structure, MNEs
