This chapter returns to the particular topic of “Three strikes and you're out”. It provides concluding emphasis on some of the legacies of the 1994 law in California and on key lessons about the governance of punishment uncovered in this study. The concrete changes produced by Three Strikes in California can be reported under four headings: the law itself, its operational impact, the Three Strikes legend in California, and the effect on the politics of criminal justice. The close connection between laws like California's version of Three Strikes and what is called the politics of distrust is one illustration of the link between the quality of criminal justice and social and governmental trends that originate outside its boundaries.
