This chapter uses Three Strikes as a case study in the evolving politics of criminal punishment in the United States. It provides two complementary historical perspectives on the story of Three Strikes and extracts lessons about the political science of crime policy. The first section presents hard data on changes in crime and punishment in the quarter of a century that preceded Three Strikes. The second section briefly outlines perspectives on the politics of punishment derived from recent American history. The third section discusses a link between broader trends in government and politics and the politics of criminal justice.
