This opening chapter describes the foundation that Dignity Therapy is based on. Most of the chapter provides a detailed description of the Model of Dignity in the Terminally Ill. This model informs most every aspect of Dignity Therapy. As such, a detailed description of the themes and sub-themes subsumed within this model is provided. The model is divided between illness related concerns (those things that are illness mediated and can influence sense of dignity); the dignity conserving repertoire (psychological and spiritual issues that can influence sense of dignity); and the social dignity inventory (socially mediated variables that can influence sense of dignity).

Keywords:   model of dignity, terminally ill, illness related concerns, dignity conserving repertoire, social dignity inventory
