This chapter looks at the proximate causes of declining trust involving people's experiences with the healthcare system. Trust busters include their perceptions of the system, inadequate communication between patient and physician, disparities in healthcare access and treatment, and medical errors. It proposes building trust using the patient-centered care model which places patients as decision makers, participants, and evaluators of their own care.
