This chapter presents a synthesis of discussions in the preceding chapters. It argues that it is crucial to differentiate clearly heterogeneity, variability, and diversity, since a great deal of the disagreements in literature arose from the mixing of arguments related to cell-to-cell variability within defined interneuronal subtypes with data on interneuronal species diversity. Cell-to-cell variability not only naturally existed within populations of interneurons belonging to the same subtype, but that this cell-to-cell variability had several functional consequences, including regulation of neuronal excitability, oscillatory activity, and network synchrony.
