This chapter begins with a discussion of the differences between the development of glutamatergic cells and interneurons. It then considers the factors affecting interneuronal migration and how distinct areas serve as the calfing grounds for interneuronal progenitors. It argues that interneurons, at the time of starting their migration, seem to already belong to fairly distinct subgroups. The fact that interneurons have to cover considerable distances during their migrations is likely to have consequences for the intra-subtype (i.e., cell-to-cell) variance.
