Practicing neuroscientists often view philosophical or conceptual considerations with suspicion. The importance of laboratory experiments should not be belittled; to date, neuroscience remains a primarily experimental discipline. However, no amount of empirical or experimental work will undo a conceptual confusion or error in reasoning. This chapter makes some comments about avoiding conceptual pitfalls and also gives some general methodological considerations. Specifically, it discusses conceptual clarity and valid reasoning and the nature of scientific method.

Keywords:   conceptual clarity, valid reasoning, syntax, logic, scientific method, experimental methods, deductive method, inductive method, causation, correlation
