This chapter discusses sports safety in schools. Athletic activities promote good health habits and provide many opportunities for developing social and leadership skills. The inherent risks in outdoor sports participation can be mitigated by careful design and maintenance of playing fields, adequate lighting, and protective fencing. Indoor sports injuries can result from insufficient space allowances or inadequate equipment. Every school should have a general emergency plan that includes communication procedures, presence of an ambulance and emergency medical help at appropriate times, and proper medical equipment.
