It is to the partisans of the new folk song revival that this book is first addressed. Classic English Folk Songs is a selection that contains some delightful surprises for those who have been singing folk songs for years. The songs are all taken from the Journal of the Folk Song Society and its continuation, the Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. The Folk Song Society was founded in 1898, as the culmination of the work of Sabine Baring-Gould, Lucy Broadwood, Fuller Maitland, Frank Kidson, and others in rescuing the beautiful traditional music of England from oblivion. The Folk Song Society and its successor, the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), have published annually, as their Journal, a small volume of the songs discovered by their members. This book consists of versions of songs that have hitherto remained in what is practically a private collection.
