Nicotine binds to specific cholinergic receptors. A nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) is a ligand-gated cation channel. Each receptor consists of five subunit proteins surrounding a channel pore that mediate many of the biological effects of acetylcholine. This chapter uses a combination of biochemical, anatomical, and behavioral approaches to evaluate the hypothesis that functional nAChRs are expressed on catecholamine neurons during critical phases of brain development.
