This chapter describes COGENT (cognitive objects in a graphical environment), a graphical object-oriented system for the development and exploration of computational models. COGENT builds on the box and arrow notation popular within information processing psychology and provides a graphical editor, standardized notation, and operational semantics for box and arrow diagrams. Control within COGENT models is distributed and is manifest via local interactions between connected parameterized boxes. Some consequences of this approach to control within COGENT models are discussed. COGENT's generality is then illustrated through a partial implementation of Norman and Shallice's contention scheduling/supervisory system theory of controlled and automatic processing. The implementation combines multiple control mechanisms within a single cognitive model and demonstrates COGENT's ability to model neurological damage through modification of box parameters.
