(p.218) Chapter Fourteen At Last, Light
Saving the Holy Sepulchre

Raymond Cohen

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the reconstruction of the great dome over the rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The contract for the project was awarded to British structural engineering firm Campbell, Reith and Partners. The project called for an external roofing of lead, copper or other light materials of timeless and aesthetic value and the installation of the lightest internal and external shells over the existing steel dome trusses. The project proceeded uneventfully and it was completed in eighteen months.
