This chapter examines the reconstruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre commissioned in July 1938 by Archbishop Gustavo Testa. The plan involved the demolition of the entire Holy Sepulchre complex and construction of a grandiose edifice surrounded by a broad piazza. Testa's revisionist architectural vision was vehemently opposed in Catholic circles. The reconstruction plan met various criticisms and it was also affected by the war.
