Terrors in the Way
Terrors in the Way
This chapter examines the challenges faced by Hassan Bey al-Katib in completing the repair work for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The prospect of change at the Holy Sepulchre stirred up all those who stood to lose or gain from the restoration and the French made a last stand in defense of its role as protector of holy places. In addition, the Suez Crisis erupted and the crises of succession in the Armenian and Greek patriarchates paralyzed both communities.
