Saving the Holy Sepulchre

Raymond Cohen

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the enthronement of his beatitude Patriarch Kyr Benedictos I which took place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem in March 1957. When Benedictos entered office he was determined to restore the Church of the Anastasis, whose steady deterioration he had witnessed. To accomplish this project, Benedictos strived to improve relations with other churches. Preliminary contacts to restore interchurch relations took place more or less at the same time that negotiations were under way to restore the Holy Sepulchre.
