This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the purpose of this volume and an overview of the subsequent chapters. It then discusses periodic phenomena in nature, time and periodicity, causation, self-organization as a fundamental brain operation; emergence, self-causation, and adaptation; and causation and deduction. Top-down, reverse engineering, and outside-in and inside-out strategies for understanding the brain are considered.
