This concluding chapter presents a review of the major themes of the chapters and their implications for future research. The chapters highlighted the ways in which environmental and genetic factors act in concert to modulate the course of brain development and thereby confer vulnerabilities, as well as resilience, to mental disorders. The chapters also described new research findings that shed light on the developmental processes giving rise to functional impairment and some of the promising opportunities for intervention suggested by these models. Policy implications of the findings that subsequent research might help to validate and refine are discussed.
