This introductory chapter presents an outline of the events that led to the publication of this book. It details the organization of a conference, held at the University of Pennsylvania in June 2005, which asked researchers to consider two questions regarding their work: What neurodevelopmental processes in children and adolescents could be altered so that mental disorders might be prevented? What interventions or life experiences might be able to introduce such changes? The conference attempted to merge fields that have not seen much interaction. At one extreme were specialists in brain development who may not study effects on human behavior, such as adolescent development and risk for mental disorder. At the other extreme were researchers who study human adolescents from the perspective of educational or psychological interventions. An overview of the six parts of the book is presented.
Keywords: neurodevelopmental processes, adolescent development, mental disorders, interventions, brain development
