This chapter provides a basic overview of the menstrual cycle, including a review of several factors than can influence hormone concentrations or the timing of the cycle. It briefly describes the advantages and use of conventional serum assays versus saliva for menstrual cycle monitoring, and the indirect methods available. The emphasis will be on practical dimensions of the ovarian cycle that are of greatest relevance to researchers.
