This chapter reviews epidemiologic studies on the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and obesity, focusing on the role of increasing physical activity in preventing age-related increases in overall adiposity (reflected by weight gain) and abdominal obesity (reflected by waist gain). It briefly reviews randomized controlled studies of exercise training and weight loss and maintenance among overweight and obese subjects. It discusses methodological issues in epidemiologic studies of physical activity and obesity.
