This chapter examines the work of Marc Blitzstein. Blitzstein, a pampered child from a prosperous banking family, was playing piano by ear at the age of three. At sixteen he performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Philharmonic; at nineteen he wrote his first theater score for Jasper Deeter’s semi-professional Hedgerow theater outside Philadelphia.
