This chapter examines the work of Vincent Youmans. It begins with an extended commentary of his career, and following on from this are details on productions, with data and song information. Youmans was born the day after George Gershwin. Both played an important part in developing the new musical comedy of the 1920s; both tried to move into more serious theater work; both had careers cut short by illness in their mid-thirties; and both left songs that, three-quarters of a century later, are as good as anything that has come along in the interim.
