This book strives for judicious and soundly researched accounts of major historical themes and periods. It includes nine chapters reprinted without change from the original; two that have been revised for this edition; eight that appear here for the first time; and a collection of briefer comments from foreign observers on the current state of American religion and politics. The book is the product of the recent flourishing of American religious history and the growing willingness of sociologists and political scientists to extend the insights of historians into the present. It takes stock of existing historical knowledge concerning the relations of religion and politics in the United States from the colonial settlements to the present.

Keywords:   George Bush, Republican party, religion, presidential election, United States, American politics
