Joyce's Kaleidoscope

A wake is an occasion for looking back on a life, both in mourning and in celebration. Joyce chose his title well. For, although there's lots of fun at Finnegans Wake, there's also another mood, an autumnal tone, retrospective, questioning, aware of limitations and of possibilities unrealized. Under the laughter, however boisterous it may often be, there is the voice of a reflective, aging man, not so much hoping and planning for the future as wondering about the significance of what has been. There is a concern with the final stages of life and how the whole looks from the standpoint of its closing.
