Conflicted Shaun tried to find an identity, a way of living, that would give enough to each of the incompatible impulses within him. He failed and fell, and, when we meet him again, he is recumbent. His cries of distress attract the four old men. They climb to the burial mound, the barrow; on which Yawn lies, and begin a lengthy interrogation. Shaun/ Yawn, once the apparent hope, is a complex of discordant voices, and it is painful to give them audience. So the process is slow and inefficient, often cacophonous and confused. The dreamer's problem, this chapter suggests, has recently taken the form of finding some stable identity that will survive Shaun's internal conflict, and to solve it requires resisting the disintegration of Jaun. The integration of opposing voices undertaken by HCE, flawed and muddled though it is, turns out to be the best Shaun can do.
