This chapter looks at the time near the beginning of the Wake, and traces the themes and topics through successive chapters. The first chapter of the Wake assembles characters and material that are developed throughout the book. Alternatively, the book can be read as a summary of life from the perspective of the wake, a perspective temporally later than ALP's monologue. The chapter ends with an announcement of the central character of the vignettes to come, the one “ultimendly respunchable for the hubbub caused in Edenborough”. HCE is responsible for the clamor in Eden. It is with respect and respectability that the story of HCE begins.
