The Wake's second chapter has a clear structure, giving a continuous flow of dream figures and scenes, so that it is reasonable to speak of a single vignette, one that meanders from the fairy tale of HCE and his sovereign to the vitriolic ballad of the end. This single vignette, dealing with HCE's flaws and their impact on his life as family man and as member of a community, serves as a focus for many of the dreamer's anxieties. However, most of the Wake is not like that. Often, there are abrupt shifts of topic and of mood, and the dream material is structured quite differently. The differences adapt to the ways in which the dreamer is responding to his predicament. The material immediately following the ballad is a case in point.
