(p.13) Chapter Two Terry Riley's Life and Art before In C
Terry Riley's in C

Robert Carl

Oxford University Press

This chapter traces Riley's life up to the premiere of In C: his early musical experiences in Northern California, and his life as a student in the Bay Area. In addition to studying contemporary classical music, he worked independently in free improvisation. The impact of collaborations with artists such as composers Pauline Oliveros, LaMonte Young, and choreographer Anna Halprin is explored. Salient works such as the String Quartet, String Trio, and Keyboard Study No.1 are analyzed. And critical electronic works that use tape loops and delay, such as Mescaline Mix and Music for the Gift (the latter the fruit of Riley's sojourn in Europe), are examined in light of their role in the final development of Riley's ideas about repetitive practice, which crystallized in In C.

Keywords:   Oliveros, Young, Halprin, free improvisation, tape delay, electronic music
