The piece's legacy is explored through interviews with the original performers as well as representatives of the next musical generation, including a composer, a critic, a performer, and a musicologist. Based on the previous chapter's analysis, aspects of an “ideal” or “normative” realization are explored. Final thoughts discuss the work's reconciliation of a wide range of aesthetic and cultural polarities. An Appendix provides a catalogue, description, and concise analysis of all existing commercial recordings of the work.

Keywords:   legacy, ideal performance, aesthetic polarities, commercial recordings
