This chapter presents the text of music critic Olin Downes' review of George Gershwin's rendition of his own composition An American in Paris in a concert with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra in New York, which was published in the December 1928 issue of New York Times. Downes noted that Gershwin's performance was the highlight of the show. He also suggested that though the composition contained many typical Gershwin melodies, it stirred players of the orchestra to effects of a kind they had seldom before experienced.
