This chapter presents Verna Arvey's comments on the music of George Gershwin as a friend and professional colleague. Arvey provided a portrait of Gershwin's place in American music against the backdrop of its development during the 1920s. She does broach the subject of Gershwin's indebtedness to her husband African American composer William Grant Still, and she also describes the presence and importance of Will Vodery in Gershwin's career. This chapter is based on an article originally published in the 1948 issue of Opera and Concert magazine.
