This chapter presents an excerpt of American critic and author's Isaac Goldberg's biography of George Gershwin titled George Gershwin: A Study in American Music. In this biography, partially based on the letters he exchanged with Gershwin during the writing of his book, Goldberg described the childhood of the great composer. He asserted that the smiling irony of Gershwin's career begins with his birth and that his genius was solely his own because there is not a trace of musical talent in his family tree.
