In Ruddigore, the word ‘Basingstoke’ was used by Sir Despard Murgatroyd to calm Mad Margaret during her wild fantasies. So it is that this rather nondescript Hampshire town becomes ‘a word that teems with hidden meaning’. For G & S fans around the world today, the name of a more picturesque town in the heart of England's Peak District has taken on even greater iconic status — Buxton is the mecca where over 20,000 fans and 2,000 performers gather every summer in what has become the most visible expression of Gilbert and Sullivan's extraordinary powers of survival. The Buxton International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival began in 1994 and has grown steadily ever since.
