Through international field experiences, students become immersed in a cross-cultural learning experience where they are challenged to confront different views of human behavior and learn about different systems of social welfare. Since social work is viewed differently in many countries, expectations for the learning experiences received in an international location must also vary. Therefore, using a model for placing students abroad can provide a systematic approach to the development and sustainability of an international field program. This chapter presents the principles and facilitating factors of a model for developing and sustaining international field internships. Key ingredients for institutional support and preparation of students are suggested, followed by a discussion of the articulation and evaluation of outcomes.
