Microcredit: A Development Strategy for Poverty Reduction

Microcredit: A Development Strategy for Poverty Reduction

(p.424) 64 Microcredit: A Development Strategy for Poverty Reduction
Handbook of International Social Work

Rebecca L. Thomas

Oxford University Press

This chapter addresses two questions that often arise in the microcredit research and dialogue. First, does microcredit really benefit the poor? Second, does microcredit serve as a strategy for poverty reduction? It provides a brief description of microcredit and microfinance and presents an overview of their role, targeted mostly at women, in reducing poverty. The strengths and limitations of the strategy are then discussed. The chapter concludes that despite evidence of positive effects for individuals and their families from the microcredit movement, poverty reduction must be addressed through multiple strategies.
