This chapter presents an overview of the Atkinson and Birch (1970) dynamics of action theory and summarizes research based on computer simulations of achievement situations. Task-based measures, including latency to an achievement task and percentage time spent at achievement tasks, are coordinated to dynamic concepts such as instigating and inhibitory forces. The Picture Story Exercise (PSE) as the measure of implicit motives can be administered on the Internet using survey programs that collect narratives. To facilitate research, thematic content of narratives can be analyzed using word-counting programs either as a replacement for or in conjunction with human coding of implicit motives. The reliability of the PSE is also discussed and research using the Rasch model to calculate reliability statistics is reviewed.
