The kindergarten, the elementary school, and the university, as developed in America, were largely the product of German influence. Well-established German universities attracted young Americans who contributed to the quest for academic credentials, especially after 1871, when German universities created many of their geography departments. These individuals returned to the United States with German texts, periodicals, experience, and learning. German geographers who came to the United States left their imprint, with some remaining in a college or university post in the new world. Acquaintance led to friendship and correspondence. Such exchange was a fructifying source of creative endeavor, at least until World War I and the Treaty of Versailles.
