Toward a Science of Settlement

Isaiah Bowman knew frontier life from his earliest days. He visited frontier conditions in South America, then traveled Jordan County in Montana, as well as parts of Canada. As director of the American Geographical Society he sought a large, moving idea that would companion well with the Millionth Map of Latin America and engage the Society in an investigative manner, because he was dealing with a process and a reality which, in the northern hemisphere, extended to a belt not less than 6,000 miles in extent. He wrote The Pioneer Fringe (1931), which was followed by Pioneer Settlement (1932), a collection of essays on different countries by specialists. Bowman also wrote numerous articles on this theme, directed Limits of Land Settlement (1937), and later made of the whole what he called a science of settlement.
