This chapter opens up the investigation of the religious and spiritual lives of emerging adults by telling the stories of three very different young people who were interviewed for this research project in the summer of 2008. The purpose is to convey some of the characteristics of emerging adult life and culture generally, as well as some aspects of the variety in emerging adults' religious and spiritual lives specifically. The three cases, whose stories are narrated in this chapter, also serve as illustrative references for numerous more general points and themes that are developed throughout this book.
