In the 250 years since Brainerd's death, he has continued to be an example and an inspiration to many Protestants. This chapter examines his impact on a number of key moments in Protestant missions. The first section looks at Brainerd's story in the context of the rebirth of British Protestant missions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The second section examines the effect that Brainerd had on missions in the antebellum United States. The third section deals with the way Brainerd was utilized by the student mission movement of the late 19th century. The final section consists of a series of vignettes on the utilization of Brainerd by various writers in post–World War II America.
